British Tamils Forum Statement: Tamils vote overwhelmingly for self-determination in the NPC election

The Tamil people have once again stated loud and clear their desire to determine their own future by voting for the Tamil National Alliance in overwhelming numbers in the Northern Provincial Council Election. British Tamils Forum calls on the international community to take heed of the message delivered by the voters of the Northern Province; the Tamil national question and Sri Lanka’s perpetual human rights crisis will only ever be resolved by giving the Tamil people the chance to decide for themselves how, and by whom, they wish to be governed.
It is widely agreed that the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) will be a largely ineffectual body, with negligible executive power. Furthermore, in the past few months the Sri Lankan government has openly stated its intention to even further limit the power of the council by stripping it of land and police powers.
2013-09-22 06:40:59 - வட மாகாண சபைத்தேர்தலில் இலங்கை தமிழரசுக் கட்சி 30 ஆசனங்களை ( போனஸ் 2 அடங்கலாக) கைப்பற்றி அமோக வெற்றியடைந்துள்ளது. இதுதவிர ஐக்கிய மக்கள் சுதந்திர முன்னணி 7 ஆசனங்களையும், ஸ்ரீலங்க முஸ்லிம் காங்கிரஸ் 1 ஆசனத்தையும் கைப்பற்றியுள்ளன. யாழ் மாவட்டத்தில் 213,907 வாக்குகளை மொத்தமாக பெற்ற தமிழரசுக் கட்சி 14 ஆசனங்களைக் கைப்பற்றியது. இங்கு ஐக்கிய மக்கள் சுதந்திரக் கூட்டமைப்பினால் 2 ஆசனங்களை மட்டுமே கைப்பற்ற முடிந்தது. சுமார் 25 வருடங்களுக்கு பின்னர் நடைபெற்ற வடக்கு மாகாண சபைத் தேர்தல் சர்வதேசத்தின் கவனத்தினை முற்றாக ஈர்த்திருந்தமை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. இது தவிர வட மாகாணத்தின் மற்றைய மாவட்டங்களில் கட்சிகள் பெற்ற ஆசனங்களின் எண்ணிக்கை வருமாறு,
வட மாகாண சபைத் தேர்தலுக்கு இன்னும் சில நாட்களே இருக்கின்றன. கடந்த நான்கு ஆண்டுகளாகப் பல நொண்டிச் சாட்டுக்கள் சொல்லி இழுத்தடித்து வந்த வட மாகாண சபைத் தேர்தலை வேறு வழியின்றி மகிந்த இராஜபக்சே நடத்துகிறார். இதன் மூலம் தான் சனநாயகத்தை நடைமுறைப் படுத்துவதாகச் சொன்னாலும் அனைத்துலகச் சமூகத்தின் கடும் அழுத்தத்தின் காரணமாகவே இத்தேர்தல் நடைபெறுகிறது என்பது யாவரும் அறிந்ததே. அரசியல் அமைப்புச் சட்டத்தின் 13 ஆம் திருத்தத்தின் கீழ் மாகாண சபைகளுக்கு தற்போதுள்ள அதிகாரப் பகிர்வு மிகச் சொற்பமாக இருந்தாலும் அதனைப் பயன்படுத்தி ஆட்சி அதிகாரத்தை தமிழர்களது கையில் எடுக்கவேண்டியது அவசியமாகும். அதற்காகவே தமிழ்த் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பு (ததேகூ) இத் தேர்தலில் போட்டியிடுகிறது. 13 ஆவது சட்ட திருத்தம் இனச் சிக்கலுக்கு தீர்வாக அமையமாட்டாது என்பதில் ததேகூ தெளிவாக இருக்கிறது.

Good morning, and thank you for coming. As is customary at the end of official missions such as this, I would like to make some observations concerning the human rights situation in the country. During my seven-day visit, I have held discussions with President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and senior members of the Government. These included the Ministers of External Affairs, Justice, Economic Development, National Languages and Social Integration, Youth Affairs and the Minister of Plantations Industries who is also Special Envoy to the President on Human Rights, as well as the Secretary of Defence. I also met the Chief Justice, Attorney-General, Leader of the House of Parliament and the Permanent Secretary to the President, who is head of the taskforce appointed to monitor the implementation of the report of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC). I had discussions with politicians who are not part of the current Government, namely the Leader of the Opposition and the leader of the Tamil National Alliance; in addition I met with the National Human Rights Commission, and a total of eight different gatherings of human rights defenders and civil society organizations in Colombo, Jaffna and Trincomalee. I also received briefings from the Governors and other senior officials in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 27 August 2013, 07:01 GMT] Many among more than a thousand people gathered in front of the Jaffna Public Library on Tuesday morning to personally to convey their feelings to the visiting UN Human Rights Commissioner Ms Navi Pillay, started shedding tears when they found out that Ms Pillay was taken away, through the backdoor, by the Sri Lankan officials. The crowd, who are kith and kin of the people missing in the war and the aftermath, was told by the organisers of the visit to meet in front of the Jaffna Public Library and that Ms Pillay would be witnessing them. Some of the kith and kin had even travelled from South to convey their feelings. But, after the meeting with Sri Lankan colonial governor, SL Government Agents of the districts in the North, SL-run provincial council heads of department at the Public Library hall, Ms Pillay was taken away through the backdoor. The visiting UN Human Rights Commissioner was scheduled to make a trip to witness the High Security Zone and visit civil representatives in Jaffna. But, in the last minute, the schedule has been completely changed, civil sources in Jaffna said. There were even kith and kin of Muslims gone missing in the South, among the people standing outside the Public Library to convey their message to the visiting UN Human Rights Commissioner. Ms Pillay was taken to UN office at Nalloor Road where only a selected 15 people on behalf of the missing persons, would be meeting her. Every representative would be having 3 minute to present their case, the sources said. Ms Navi Pillay is scheduled to be taken to the bungalow of the SL Governor later today for a lunch, the sources added.
