Demonstrators from both the British Tamil community and its supporters staged a mass rally to Downing Street today to call on the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, to boycott the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which is due to take place later this month in Sri Lanka. At its peak, almost 4,000 people took part in the rally, waving banners and placards describing the various human rights abuses, war crimes and acts of genocide the Sri Lankan state stands accused of committing against the Tamils. Demonstrators also displayed messages calling on David Cameron and Prince Charles to avoid lending legitimacy to a state that continues to smear “blood on its hands”.

At the end of the procession, six members of British Tamils Forum presented a petition on behalf of the crowd to 10 Downing Street, calling on the Prime Minister to boycott the summit in order to send the strongest possible message that the UK would not tolerate Sri Lanka’s historical and continuing violations of international law. The petition also called for the Commonwealth to suspend Sri Lanka and demanded that those responsible for perpetrating acts of genocide against the Tamil people must be held to account by the international community.

7 October 2013 - Bali, Indonesia -  Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement: “When Sri Lanka was selected to host the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Canada was hopeful that the Sri Lankan government would seize the opportunity to improve human rights conditions and take steps towards reconciliation and accountability. Unfortunately, this has not been the case. Canada is deeply concerned about the situation in Sri Lanka. The absence of accountability for the serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian standards during and after the civil war is unacceptable. Canada noted with concern the impeachment of the Sri Lankan Chief Justice earlier this year, and we remain disturbed by ongoing reports of intimidation and incarceration of political leaders and journalists, harassment of minorities, reported disappearances, and allegations of extra judicial killings. Canada believes that if the Commonwealth is to remain relevant it must stand in defence of the basic principles of freedom, democracy, and respect for human dignity, which are the very foundation upon which the Commonwealth was built. It is clear that the Sri Lankan government has failed to uphold the Commonwealth’s core values, which are cherished by Canadians. As such, as the Prime Minister of Canada, I will not attend the 2013 CHOGM in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This is a decision that I do not take lightly.

[TamilNet, Monday, 23 September 2013, 08:23 GMT] - The obsession of utmost priority for a section of TNA leadership is to satisfy the Sri Lanka saving agenda of New Delhi and Washington, by interpreting the TNA victory as supersession of the Vaddukkoaddai Resolution based mandate of 1977, political observers in Jaffna commented on a statement made by the TNA leader Mr. R. Sampanthan, aided by Mr M.A. Sumanthiran, at a press conference convened in Jaffna on Sunday. Sampanthan talking of united and undivided country described the TNA victory as a clear verdict of Tamils, unprecedented in the political history of the island. Answering a question raised by an Eezham Tamil journalist that how then he views the 1977 verdict, Sampanthan said that there is nothing wrong in stating that the present victory is greater than the 1977 one. Sumanthiran was heard aiding him in answering the question. Without giving an opportunity to the genocide-affected people to decide on their political status, and without proving anything on demilitarization, territorial integrity of Eezham Tamils, prevention of demographic genocide, internationally recognizable constitutional guarantee for the nation of Eezham Tamils and even an international investigation on the war crimes, New Delhi and Washington are able to extract such assurances and interpretations from a section of Tamil leadership that jump at a hollow and nothing-new PC election, the observers commented.

[Sunday 22 September 2013 ] Sri Lanka’s main ethnic Tamil party won a convincing victory in the country’s northern provincial elections, according to results released on Sunday, in what has been seen as a resounding call for wider regional autonomy in areas ravaged by a quarter-century of civil war. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) will form the first functioning provincial government in the northern Tamil heartland after securing 30 out of 38 seats in Saturday’s elections, Sri Lanka’s elections commission said. President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s coalition won the rest of the seats. The win provides a platform for the TNA to campaign for an autonomous federal state, though the provincial council is largely a toothless body. The Tamils have fought unsuccessfully for self-rule for six decades, at first through a peaceful struggle and then the bloody civil war. The elections were seen by the international community as a test of reconciliation between the Tamils and the majority ethnic Sinhalese, who control Sri Lanka’s government and military.

The Tamil people have once again stated loud and clear their desire to determine their own future by voting for the Tamil National Alliance in overwhelming numbers in the Northern Provincial Council Election. British Tamils Forum calls on the international community to take heed of the message delivered by the voters of the Northern Province; the Tamil national question and Sri Lanka’s perpetual human rights crisis will only ever be resolved by giving the Tamil people the chance to decide for themselves how, and by whom, they wish to be governed.

It is widely agreed that the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) will be a largely ineffectual body, with negligible executive power. Furthermore, in the past few months the Sri Lankan government has openly stated its intention to even further limit the power of the council by stripping it of land and police powers.

2013-09-22 06:40:59 -  வட மாகாண சபைத்தேர்தலில் இலங்கை தமிழரசுக் கட்சி  30 ஆசனங்களை ( போனஸ் 2 அடங்கலாக)  கைப்பற்றி அமோக வெற்றியடைந்துள்ளது. இதுதவிர ஐக்கிய மக்கள் சுதந்திர முன்னணி 7 ஆசனங்களையும், ஸ்ரீலங்க முஸ்லிம் காங்கிரஸ் 1 ஆசனத்தையும் கைப்பற்றியுள்ளன. யாழ் மாவட்டத்தில் 213,907 வாக்குகளை மொத்தமாக பெற்ற தமிழரசுக் கட்சி  14 ஆசனங்களைக் கைப்பற்றியது. இங்கு ஐக்கிய மக்கள் சுதந்திரக் கூட்டமைப்பினால் 2 ஆசனங்களை மட்டுமே கைப்பற்ற முடிந்தது. சுமார் 25 வருடங்களுக்கு பின்னர் நடைபெற்ற வடக்கு மாகாண சபைத் தேர்தல் சர்வதேசத்தின்  கவனத்தினை முற்றாக ஈர்த்திருந்தமை குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. இது தவிர வட மாகாணத்தின் மற்றைய மாவட்டங்களில் கட்சிகள் பெற்ற ஆசனங்களின் எண்ணிக்கை வருமாறு,

தேர்தல் முடிவு தமிழ்மக்கள்  அபிவிருத்தி அல்ல தங்கள் மண்ணில்   தன்மானத்தோடு வாழ்வதையே விரும்புகிறார்கள் என்பதை  மகிந்த இராஜபக்சேக்கும்  உலகத்துக்கும் எடுத்துச் சொல்ல  வேண்டும்!

வட மாகாண சபைத் தேர்தலுக்கு இன்னும் சில நாட்களே இருக்கின்றன. கடந்த நான்கு ஆண்டுகளாகப் பல நொண்டிச் சாட்டுக்கள் சொல்லி இழுத்தடித்து வந்த வட மாகாண சபைத் தேர்தலை வேறு வழியின்றி மகிந்த இராஜபக்சே நடத்துகிறார். இதன் மூலம் தான் சனநாயகத்தை நடைமுறைப் படுத்துவதாகச்  சொன்னாலும் அனைத்துலகச் சமூகத்தின் கடும் அழுத்தத்தின் காரணமாகவே இத்தேர்தல் நடைபெறுகிறது என்பது யாவரும் அறிந்ததே. அரசியல் அமைப்புச் சட்டத்தின் 13 ஆம் திருத்தத்தின் கீழ்  மாகாண சபைகளுக்கு தற்போதுள்ள அதிகாரப் பகிர்வு மிகச் சொற்பமாக இருந்தாலும் அதனைப் பயன்படுத்தி ஆட்சி அதிகாரத்தை தமிழர்களது கையில் எடுக்கவேண்டியது அவசியமாகும்.  அதற்காகவே தமிழ்த் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பு (ததேகூ) இத் தேர்தலில் போட்டியிடுகிறது. 13 ஆவது சட்ட திருத்தம் இனச் சிக்கலுக்கு தீர்வாக அமையமாட்டாது என்பதில் ததேகூ  தெளிவாக இருக்கிறது.

சனாதிபதி மகிந்த இராசபக்சே பங்கேற்ற வடக்கின் முதலாவது தேர்தல் பிரசாரக் கூட்டம் நேற்று வவுனியா வைரவப் புளியங்குளம் விளையாட்டு மைதானத்தில் நடைபெற்றது. இதில் ஜனாதிபதி உரை நிகழ்த்தினார்.

1) பிரபாகரன் கேட்டதையே கூட்டமைப்பும் கேட்கிறது; வவுனியா கூட்டத்தில் மfந்த காட்டம் பிரபாகரன் அன்று கேட்டதையே தமிழ்த் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பினர் இன்று கேட்கின்றனர். புலிகள் இந்த நாட்டைப் பிரிப்பதற்குப் பேசியது போன்று இப்போது கூட்டமைப்பினரும் பேசுகின்றனர். இதனை ஒரு போதும் அனுமதிக்கமாட்டேன் என்று சனாதிபதி மகிந்த இராசபக்சே நேற்று வவுனியாவில் வைத்து தெரிவித்தார்.

பதில்: பேச்சுப் பல்லக்கு தம்பி கால்நடை என்பது போல சனாதிபதி மகிந்த இராசபக்சே  வடக்குக்குப் போகும் போதெல்லாம் சமத்துவம், சகவாழ்வு பற்றி தேனொழுகப் பேசுகிறார். ஆனால் நடைமுறையில் தமிழ்மக்கள்  இராணுவத்தால் அடிமைகள் போல் அடக்கி ஒடுக்கி  ஆளப்படுகிறார்கள். இதுதான் உண்மை.

On the first day of the 24th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, we have lost one of the most ardent human rights activist, Sunila Abeyasekara, in Sri Lanka. Sunila represented a unique voice from within the majority Sinhalese community. She fought repression of all forms, be it against Sinhalese, Tamils, women, Muslims and youth. She built an international solidarity network around the globe, which worked on issues of poverty, environment, labour, women’s rights, and emancipation.

வட மாகாண சபைத் தேர்தலுக்கு இன்னும் 3 வாரங்களே எஞ்சியிருக்கின்றன. செப்தெம்பர் 21 இல் தேர்தல் நடைபெற இருக்கிறது. வடக்கில் ஒரு நியாயமான, நீதியான, சுதந்திரமான தேர்தல் நடைபெற வேண்டும் என்பதே மக்களாட்சி முறைமையில் நம்பிக்கையுள்ள மக்களது எதிர்பார்ப்பாக இருக்கிறது. ஆனால் அங்கிருந்து வரும் செய்திகள் ஒரு நியாயமான, நீதியான, சுதந்திரமான தேர்தல் நடைபெறும் சாத்தியத்தை கேள்விக் குறியாக்கியுள்ளது. இது பல விதத்திலும் எதிர்பார்க்கப்பட்டதே. மாகாண சபைத் தேர்தலில் தமிழ்த் தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பு (ததேகூ) ஆளும் அய்க்கிய மக்கள் சுதந்திரக் கட்சியோடு மட்டும் அல்லாமல் சிங்கள இராணுவத்தோடும் போட்டியிட வேண்டியுள்ளது. சிங்கள இராணுவம் ஆளும் கட்சிக்கு ஆதரவாக இன்னொரு அரசியல் சக்தியாக களம் இறங்கியுள்ளது. பிந்திக் கிடைத்த செய்தியின் படி கிளிநொச்சியில் ததேகூ இன் ஆதரவாளர்களுக்கு இராணுவம் கொலை அச்சுறுத்தல் விடுத்துள்ளதுடன் கட்சி சார்ந்த அரசியல் செயற்பாடுகளுக்கும் இராணுவத்தினர் தடைகளைப் போட்டு  வருகின்றனர் என ததேகூ இன் நாடாளுமன்ற   உறுப்பினர்  சி. சிறிதரன் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். இது தொடர்பாக அவர் மேலும் தெரிவிக்கையில், குறிப்பாக ததேகூ சார்பில் வடக்கு மாகாண சபைத் தேர்தலில் போட்டியிடுகின்ற குருகுலராசா, பசுபதிப்பிள்ளை போன்றோரின் வெற்றிவாய்ப்புக்கள் உறுதியாகியுள்ள நிலையில் அவர்களுக்காகப் பரப்புரை  செய்கின்ற கூட்டமைப்பின் ஆதரவாளர்களை இராணுவம் தடுக்கின்றது.

Good morning, and thank you for coming. As is customary at the end of official missions such as this, I would like to make some observations concerning the human rights situation in the country.  During my seven-day visit, I have held discussions with President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and senior members of the Government. These included the Ministers of External Affairs, Justice, Economic Development, National Languages and Social Integration, Youth Affairs and the Minister of Plantations Industries who is also Special Envoy to the President on Human Rights, as well as the Secretary of Defence.  I also met the Chief Justice, Attorney-General, Leader of the House of Parliament and the Permanent Secretary to the President, who is head of the taskforce appointed to monitor the implementation of the report of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC). I had discussions with politicians who are not part of the current Government, namely the Leader of the Opposition and the leader of the Tamil National Alliance; in addition I met with the National Human Rights Commission, and a total of eight different gatherings of human rights defenders and civil society organizations in Colombo, Jaffna and Trincomalee. I also received briefings from the Governors and other senior officials in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 27 August 2013, 07:01 GMT] Many among more than a thousand people gathered in front of the Jaffna Public Library on Tuesday morning to personally to convey their feelings to the visiting UN Human Rights Commissioner Ms Navi Pillay, started shedding tears when they found out that Ms Pillay was taken away, through the backdoor, by the Sri Lankan officials. The crowd, who are kith and kin of the people missing in the war and the aftermath, was told by the organisers of the visit to meet in front of the Jaffna Public Library and that Ms Pillay would be witnessing them. Some of the kith and kin had even travelled from South to convey their feelings. But, after the meeting with Sri Lankan colonial governor, SL Government Agents of the districts in the North, SL-run provincial council heads of department at the Public Library hall, Ms Pillay was taken away through the backdoor.  The visiting UN Human Rights Commissioner was scheduled to make a trip to witness the High Security Zone and visit civil representatives in Jaffna. But, in the last minute, the schedule has been completely changed, civil sources in Jaffna said. There were even kith and kin of Muslims gone missing in the South, among the people standing outside the Public Library to convey their message to the visiting UN Human Rights Commissioner.  Ms Pillay was taken to UN office at Nalloor Road where only a selected 15 people on behalf of the missing persons, would be meeting her. Every representative would be having 3 minute to present their case, the sources said. Ms Navi Pillay is scheduled to be taken to the bungalow of the SL Governor later today for a lunch, the sources added. வட மாகாண சபைத் தேர்தலுக்கான  நாளை  தேர்தல் ஆணையாளர் நீண்ட காத்திருக்குப் பின்னர் அறிவித்துள்ளார். தேர்தல் எதிர்வரும் செப்தெம்பர் மாதம் 21 ஆம் நாள் நடைபெறவுள்ளது.  தேர்தல் நடைபெறுவது உறுதி செய்யப்பட்டாலும் தேர்தல் அறிவித்த படி நடக்கும் என்பதற்கு எந்த உத்தரவாதமும் இல்லை.  காவல்துறை, காணி அதிகாரங்களை நீக்கும் வரை அரசு வட மாகாணசபைத் தேர்தலை நடத்தக்கூடாது என வலியுறுத்தியும்  13 ஆவது சட்ட திருத்தத்தையிட்டு இந்தியாவின் தலையீட்டுக்கு எதிராகவும் சிங்கள மக்களை அணிதிரட்டி, கொழும்பில் பெரும் போராட்டங்களை சிங்கள தேசியவாத அமைப்புகள் நடத்தி வருகின்றன.  வட மாகாண சபைத் தேர்தல் நடைபெறுவதை எதிர்த்து சிங்கள தேசியக் கூட்டமைப்பு  நீதிமன்றத்தில் வழக்குத் தாக்கல் செய்துள்ளது.  அரசியல் மயப்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ள நீதிமன்றம் தேர்தல் நடைபெறுவதற்கான நாளை ஒத்திப் போடலாம்.

இலங்கையில் இன, மத, மொழி பேதங்களைக் கடந்து, அனைத்து இன மாணவர்களும் எல்லா இனத்தவர்களதும் புனித ஸ்தலங்களுக்கு சுற்றுலாப் பயணங்களை மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டுமென அறிவுறுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந் நிலையில் அண்மையில் பதுளை, கத்தோலிக்கத் திருச்சபையின் பாதிரியார் திரு.பிரியலால் அவர்களுடனான கலந்துரையாடலின் போது இலங்கையில் கல்வித் திட்டத்தில் நடைமுறையிலுள்ள பல விடயங்கள் குறித்து அவர் தெளிவுபடுத்தினார்.

நாம் காண்பதைத் தாண்டியும் ஏதோவொன்று எல்லாவற்றுக்குள்ளும் இருக்கிறதென்பதை பாதிரியாரின் கருத்திலிருந்து விளங்கிக் கொள்ள முடிந்தது. அதாவது தமிழ் மொழி மூல மாணவர்கள் பௌத்த விகாரைகளை வழிபட வருவதென்பது கல்விச் சுற்றுநிருபம் மூலம் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட பலவந்தமான கட்டளையொன்றின் பிரதிபலன் எனலாம். வெசாக் உற்சவ வாரத்தினை முன்னிட்டு அனைத்து தமிழ் மற்றும் முஸ்லிம் பாடசாலைகளுக்கு, பௌத்த மத வழிபாட்டு நிகழ்வுகளில் கலந்துகொள்ளும்படி சுற்றுநிருபங்கள் அனுப்பப்பட்டிருந்தன. எமது அரசியல் அதிகாரங்கள், பலவந்தமாகவும் ஒருதலைப்பட்சமாகவும் உருவாக்க முற்படும் இவ்வாறான சில நியமங்களின் காரணமாகவே, மத ஒற்றுமைக்கும் இன ஒருமைப்பாட்டுக்குமிடையில் விரிசல்களும், குழப்பங்களும், தடைகளும் ஏற்படுவதாக பாதிரியார் கூறுகிறார்.

இலங்கையில் வாழும் 'தமிழர்கள்' எல்லோரும் தமிழர்கள் அல்லர். இலங்கையின் தென்மேற்குப் பகுதிகளில் பிறந்து வளர்ந்த சிலர் தமிழரல்லாதோராக மாறியிருந்தனர். பெரும்பாலும் தமிழைப் பேசவோ எழுதவோ முடியாதவர்கள் அவர்கள். ஆனால், சிங்கள மொழியை அந்த மொழியின் அன்றாடப் பேச்சு வழக்கில் சரளமாகப் பேசக்கூடியவர்கள். அவர்கள் சிங்களம் பேசினால் அவர்களைத் தமிழர் என்று அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்ள முடியாது. இனக்கலவரங்களின்போது உயிர்பிழைக்க இத்தகைய ஆற்றல் ஒரு முக்கியமான தேவையாகும். மொழி, அதனுடைய தொனி, பேச்சு வழக்கு போன்ற இயல்புகள் வாழ்வையும் சாவையும் தீர்மானிக்கக்கூடியதாக மாற்றம் பெற்றுவிடுகிற கணங்கள் அவை. தமிழரல்லாத தமிழர்களான எனது இரண்டு நண்பர்கள் ஜூலை 83இல் அந்தப் பயங்கரமான படுகொலை வாரத்தில் தப்பிப் பிழைத்தார்கள். ஒருவர் இலங்கையின் தென்பகுதி நகரமான காலியில் பிறந்து வளர்ந்தவர். காலியில் நாங்கள் பாடசாலை மாணவர்களாக இருந்தோம். இப்பொழுது அவருக்கு 53 வயது. நாங்கள் அவரை டேமியன் என்று அழைக்கலாம். டேமியன் உயர்ந்த தொழிலில் இருந்தவர். அவருடைய நண்பர்கள் பலரைப் போல அன்றி, இலங்கையை விட்டு எப்போதுமே வெளியேறாதவர். இலங்கையை விட்டு வெளியேறும் எண்ணம் எதுவும் அவருக்கு இருக்கவும் இல்லை. அவருடைய மனைவி தமிழரல்லர். டேமியனும் மனைவியும் கத்தோலிக்கர்கள். கொழும்பில், காலி வீதியில் இருந்து ஒரு கூப்பிடு தூரத்தில் இருந்தது டேமியனின் வீடு. டேமியனின் தந்தை வழிப் பெயர் தமிழ்ப் பெயராகவே இருந்தது.

நாட்டின் பதின்மூன்றாவது தேர்தலுக்குப் பின் இந்திய சமுதாயம் எதிர்நோக்கியப் பல்வேறு பிரச்சினைகள் பற்றி பல்வேறு கோணத்தில் ‘சுடும் உண்மைகள்’ பகுதியில் மனதைத் தைக்கும் விடயங்களை ஆதாரத்துடன்  ஆசிரியர் திரு.பி.ஆர்.இராஜன் எழுதிவருதைக் கண்டு வருந்தாத தமிழ்ப் பற்றாளர்கள் இருக்க முடியுமா? சிறிய சமூகத்திற்கு இத்தனைப் பிரச்சனைகளா? என்று வியக்காதவர்கள் யார்? காவல் துறையின் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இருக்கும் 'லாக்கா'ப்பில் இந்திய இளைஞர்களின்  தொடர் மரணங்கள் சமுதாயத்தினரிடையே அமைதியற்ற நிலையையும் பதற்றத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்தி வருகின்றன. திட்டமிட்டே,கல்விமான்களும், நீதிபதி அந்தஸ்திலுள்ளவர்களும் அரசாங்கம் தங்களுக்குச்சாதகமாக இருக்கிறது என்ற தெனாவெட்டில் பொறுப்பற்ற நிலையில் தமிழ்ப்பள்ளிகளை மூடச்சொல்வதும், தமிழ்மொழியின் அழிவிற்குப் பாதகமான கருத்துகளைக் கூறும் நிலை தொடர்வதைக் காணும் போது,இந்தியர்கள் இந்த நாட்டில் மாற்றான் தாய் பிள்ளைகளாக ஆக்கப்பட்டுவிட்டார்களோ  என்ற ஐயமும் பீதியும் எழுகின்றன.மேலும்,சம்பந்தப்பட்டவர்கள் மீது தகுந்த நடவடிக்கைகளை எடுக்காமல் இந்திய சமுதாயம் எக்கேடாவதுக் கெட்டுப்போகட்டும் என்று மெத்தனப் போக்கினைக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது வருத்தமளிக்கிறது.இந்திய சமுதாயம் கேட்பாரற்ற சமூதாயமாக இருக்கும் சூழல் தொடர்ந்து இருக்க வேண்டுமா? தடுமாறிக் கொண்டிருக்கும்இந்திய சமுதாயத்திற்கு அரசு கருணை காட்டக்கூடாதா? இந்திய அரசியல்வாதிகளும்,சமுதாயத்தலைவர்களும் சொந்த சகோதரர்களின்  மேம்பாட்டுக்காகத் தங்களுக்கிடையே நிலவும் கருத்து வேறுபாடுகளையும் சுயநலப்போக்கையும் சற்று தள்ளி வைத்துவிட்டு  நேசக்கரம் நீட்டக் கூடாதா?

நெல்சன் மண்டேலாவின் 95வது பிறந்தநாளைக் கொண்டாடுவதற்கு தென்னாபிரிக்க மக்கள் மட்டுமல்ல, உலகத்தின் பல பாகங்களில் இருந்தும் இன, மத, மொழி வேறுபாடின்றிக் கலந்து கொள்வதில் மிகவும் ஆர்வமாக இருந்தார்கள். யூலை மாதம் 18ம் திகதி வியாழக்கிழமை அவரது பிறந்த நாளாகும். தனது மண்ணின் விடுதலைக்காக முன்னின்று உழைத்த இவர் 1994ம் ஆண்டு தென்னாபிரிக்காவின் முதலாவது கறுப்பின முதல்வராகத் தெரிவு செய்யப்பட்டார். இதற்காக இவர் 27 வருடங்கள் கடும் சிறை வாசம் செய்தார். மனிதநேயத்திற்காக உழைத்த இவர் பலராலும் போற்றப்பட்டதில் வியப்பே இல்லை.  அவர் நலமடைந்து வருவதாகத் தற்போதைய செய்திகள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.  கடந்த சில வாரங்களாக நோய் வாய்ப்பட்டிருந்த இவர் ‘நலம் பெற வேண்டுகின்றோம்’ என்று ஊர் பெயர் தெரியாத பல்லாயிரக் கணக்கான மக்கள் தங்கள் மனம் திறந்த பிரார்த்தனையைக் கடித மூலமும், பதாதைகள் மூலமும் அவருக்குத் தெரிவித்திருந்தனர். வேறு பலர் அவரை அனுமதித்திருந்த வைத்தியசாலைக்கு முன்னால் கூட்டமாக நின்று பாடல்கள் மூலம் அவர் விரைவாக நலம் பெற வேண்டும் என்று பிரார்த்தனை செய்தனர். அவர் கடும் சுகவீனம் அடைந்திருக்கிறார் என்ற செய்தி வெளியே தெரிந்ததும் உலகின் பல பாகங்களில் இருந்தும் அவருக்காகப் பிரார்த்தனைகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன. இது எதை எடுத்துக் காட்டுகின்றது? ஒரு மனிதனின் இறுதிக் காலத்தில் இத்தகைய பிரார்த்தனைகள்தான் அவன் மனிதனாக இந்த உலகத்தில் வாழ்ந்தான் என்பதை உறுதி செய்கிறது. பணம் கொடுத்து ஒருவரைப்பற்றிப் புகழாரம் பாடவைக்கும் நிகழ்ச்சிகள் பல மலிந்து விட்ட இந்தக் காலத்தில் நெல்சன் மண்டேலா போன்ற உயர்ந்த மனிதரின் வாழ்க்கைச் சரித்திரத்தை, கோடிக்கணக்கான உள்ளங்களில் எப்படி அவரால் குடிபுக முடிந்தது என்பதை நாமும் அறிந்து கொள்ளவது மிகவும் அவசியமாகும். மக்களின் உண்மையான பிரார்த்தனை வீண்போகவில்லை. அவர் நலமடைந்து வருவதாகத் தற்போதைய செய்திகள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன. நல்ல உள்ளம் படைத்தவர்களுக்கு அவரது வாழ்க்கைச் சரித்திரம் நல்லதோர் எடுத்துக் காட்டாக அமையும்.

Canada Day (French: Fête du Canada) is the national day of Canada, a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act, 1867 (today called the Constitution Act, 1867), which united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire. Originally called Dominion Day (French: Le Jour de la Confédération), the holiday was renamed in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as among Canadians internationally.

Commemoration
Frequently referred to as "Canada's birthday", particularly in the popular press, the occasion marks the joining of the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces (the Province of Canada being divided, in the process, into Ontario and Quebec) on July 1, 1867. Canada became a kingdom in its own right on that date, but the British parliament and Cabinet kept limited rights of political control over the new country that were shed by stages over the years until the last vestiges were surrendered in 1982, when the Constitution Act patriated the Canadian constitution.
